Annual Core Group Meeting 2019

On March 20-22, 2019, two and a half years into its foundational process, the Health Systems Governance Collaborative core group met in Geneva to take stock of where it stands and of the priority actions for the coming months and years.

The secretariat and members involved in the different products took this opportunity to report back on the progress made in addressing the two initial priority topics, (1) the governance capacity and the changing roles of ministries of health in the 21st century, and (2) definition, frameworks and measurements for health systems governance.

Collaborative products under development include :

  • a framework and literature review around the governance capacities of ministries of health (soon to be made available for discussion on the Collaborative platform)
  • a general framework for actionable health systems governance
  • a glossary of health systems governance terms
  • a series of deep dives, four of which are already in different phases of development

During this meeting, the group also emphasized the importance of the regional and local chapters to anchor the work of the collaborative in the realities of practitioners at different levels. While the Eastern Mediterranean Chapter was launched in November 2018 and continues to develop; a Francophone Chapter will be launched in June 2019 to allow local stakeholders in francophone countries to enter the health systems governance debate by removing the language barrier.

Finally, the group engaged in a productive brainstorm session around how to move to the next phase in the process of building the Collaborative community and promoted the idea that all Collaborative members should have the possibility to engage around the different knowledge products under development, at different phases of the production, and to come forward with their own work to enrich the discussion.

Detailed information on the Collaborative workstreams and community building will soon be available through the 2018/2019 iteration of the Collaborative Annual Report.
